The bestselling author of A Gentleman in Moscow and Rules of Civility and master of absorbing, sophisticated fiction returns with a stylish and propulsive novel set in 1950s America

In June, 1954, eighteen-year-old Emmett Watson is driven home to Nebraska by the warden of the juvenile work farm where he has just served fifteen months for involuntary manslaughter. His mother long gone, his father recently deceased, and the family farm foreclosed upon by the bank, Emmett’s intention is to pick up his eight-year-old brother, Billy, and head to California where they can start their lives anew. But when the warden drives away, Emmett discovers that two friends from the work farm have hidden themselves in the trunk of the warden’s car. Together, they have hatched an altogether different plan for Emmett’s future, one that will take them all on a fateful journey in the opposite direction—to the City of New York.

Spanning just ten days and told from multiple points of view, Towles’s third novel will satisfy fans of his multi-layered literary styling while providing them an array of new and richly imagined settings, characters, and themes.

What Audible Listeners Are Saying

5/5 stars — “Great for a road trip”
Loved the story throughout but found the ending slightly problematic. Need to think some more about it, Which isn’t all bad.

5/5 stars — “Some May Find it Frustrating; I Found it Wonderful”
I love the way Amor Towles writes. He is quietly contemplative and does a deep dive into all of his major characters while moving the plot forward in a slow but steady manner. And he sticks to this plan with The Lincoln Highway.

Emmett Watson (18) returns home to Nebraska after spending time at a juvenile work farm for committing involuntary manslaughter. He returns to an abandoned home — his father has died, his mother long ago left the family, and his younger brother Billy is being tended to by Sally, a dear friend who just happens to be in love with Emmett (even if Emmett has no idea of her affections).

Emmett intends to leave Nebraska, taking Billy with him to California to search for their mother in the Studebaker that he painstakingly purchased through odd carpentry jobs. His goal is to buy a house, fix it up, sell it, buy two houses, fix them up, sell them, etc. But this plan is immediately stalled when he finds two mates from the juvenile farm hiding in his trunk: Duchess (a fast-talking bad boy) and Woolly (a sweet but somewhat slow young man who comes from wealth). Those two have plans of their own for Emmett and the Studebaker.

And thus begins a zig-zagged cross-country adventure that is at times frustrating (mostly because Towles keeps throwing the plot off-kilter with new and different adventures) and other times dangerous, scary, tender, and ultimately life-affirming.

Some may not have the patience for this book but if you love beautifully written prose, characters with depth, and a plot that moves along (albeit slowly), you will not be disappointed.

The narrators are fantastic and manage to bring these wonderful characters to life in a beautiful way.

I loved it.

5/5 stars — “kept me worried the whole time”
This was a great story and I was worried the whole time what was going to happen to each one of the boys. I was constantly rooting for them and praying they would all make it to the other side.
Each and every character in this novel grabs at a part of you and makes you want them to succeed, no matter what they have done in the past or what they are doing right now. Even the naughty ones ….. except the Preacher ….. has some good in them that makes you want them to make it.
I loved this and highly recommend. What an amazing writer.
The Narrators of the story did an AWESOME job. I loved the sound of their voices and they did not go all funky on the character voices as some do where it makes it hard to listen to the story being told.
Bravo to all three.
