Ive been looking forward to this for an “age” now. Often times the anticipation of a thing is such that it’s reality will cause it to fall short of your expectations. Pierce Brown did not fall short of mine with “Dark Age”. This book hits like a sucker punch to the gut for anyone who has been following the Red Rising series until now. I burn through audiobooks like a repressed domestic watches their soaps. So whenever I find an author that can keep me riveted to my seat and make you shudder with dread, it is worth waiting for. I can never guess when the next freight train of WTF will hit in this series. And that emotional roller coaster makes this book a smashing success in my opinion. He really fleshed out a couple of the characters I hadn’t realized I cared as much about. I was skeptical at first when I saw that it wasn’t going to be narrated solely by Tim Gerard Reynolds, but after finishing the audiobook I really hope they follow this format going forward. 4/5 stars — “I am an absolute huge fan of this but….a baby!”
Small Spoilers From Previous Books!!Okay I want to get this straight I am probably the biggest fan of the series around. I’ve read, reread and recommended the series to everybody I possibly can. With that being said let me begin my spiel. I understand what Pierce Brown was going for here to give you the feel of the war and I AM THRILLED both at the intensity and action this up close view of "An Iron Rain." Before we always saw the aftermath. The awards and machinations of both sides. The killing was done mostly by the nuking of a planet, the launching of a missile into (fleets, docks, etc.) , essentially with the exception of The institute, death and madness, were something that were heard of and understood to be "the cost of war". Now our characters must begin to suffer the reality the were creating from the consequences of what the first three books have really set into motion. what those "children" have caused and now they must suffer as adults. AnD I LoVe It. But, BUT, BUT!!! everybody knows exactly the scene I’m talking about…. where you just go why! why! why! why? I’ve probably listened to all the books three times now. loved all the narrator’s even through the changes including the needed one for Lysander.
SIDE NOTE (huge spoiler for trig if you have not read entire series.but why would you be here?)
….. must say that Ephraim has absolutely stole the show and I demand spin-offs from before the series leading to concurrent with the series all the way to Trig’s death. maybe starting with his time as a soldier than his time doing wet work eventually leading to the scene where he survives and the rest of his squad doesn’t. As the last book in his stand alone series I would also love to see something like that and the romance between him and Trig fixing it. leading to the actions in the book.DONT READ PAST HERE IF YOU HAVE NOT FINISED DARK AGE.

The story is awesome and the performances are great! My only complaint is it’s recorded too low. At points I can barely hear what the narrator is saying. I need to put my volume all the way up. If there is anyway to fix that, that would be great.— Peter, Audible listener
