Publisher’s Summary

From the Hugo Award–winning and New York Times bestselling author of the Expanse, James S. A. Corey, comes the start of a monumental new space opera series.

HOW HUMANITY CAME TO THE PLANET CALLED ANJIIN IS LOST IN THE FOG OF HISTORY, BUT THAT HISTORY IS ABOUT TO END.

The Carryx—part empire, part hive—has waged wars of conquest for centuries, destroying or enslaving species across the galaxy in its conflict with an ancient and deathless enemy.

When they descend on the isolated world of Anjiin, the human population is abased, slaughtered, and put in chains. The best and brightest are abducted, taken to the Carryx world-palace to join prisoners from a thousand other species.

Dafyd Alkhor, assistant to a prestigious scientist, is captured along with his team.

Even he doesn’t suspect that his peculiar insight and skills will be the key to seeing past their captors’ terrifying agenda.

Swept up in a conflict beyond his control and vaster than his imagination, Dafyd is poised to become humanity’s champion—and its betrayer.

This is where his story begins.

“No one builds a universe like James S. A. Corey. The Mercy of Gods is wilder and weirder than you can imagine, and when it ends, all you’ll want is … more.”—John Scalzi, New York Times bestselling author

What Audible Listeners Are Saying

4/5 stars — “Revised review “
I waited for this book – the first in a new series, but the story took a long time to develop. It could have been shorter. But my first review was unfair to Jefferson Mays. This is what I initially wrote. “But most of all, and sorry to say this, but Jefferson Mays’ voice seemed shaky at times and his delivery was at a snail’s pace. “

Uh… it helps to double check the voice speed in your settings. On a second listen, and with the speed set to default (it was set way too slow for some reason), I once again loved JM’s voice and delivery. So my bad for those comments.

But also, even on a second listen, the build up is slow. I can imagine subsequent books in the series taking many paths and themes based on how packed this first book is. I am keeping my fingers crossed the pace will pick up in book 2, etc. It’s a creepy, haunted science fiction world, where other life forms don’t think like humans.
Imagine intelligent insects ruling the universe- not saying the aliens are like that- just saying the book is otherworldly in its imagination and scope.

4/5 stars — “Boring aliens “
The aliens were somehow too much and too little. Too many varieties and descriptions of those varieties in a way that didn’t contribute much to the story.

4/5 stars — “Step one in this series”
I love Corey’s wit and character development. However, this falls short in comparison to some of the previous works. Also, the hard science is lacking a bit. How, is it that all these aliens can coexist in the same environment?
