So cleverly done! At no point does the author actually name which famous character he has incorporated, but as they speak, or more frequently, as they are described by their familiars, do you begin to place who they must be. The majority of the book is narrated by a dog and his conversations with other animals. Playing on literature high and low, movie monsters and Halloween superstitions, this great tale gets told. It’s actually a goofy premise, like those werewolf meets Dracula movies, but he really makes it work. The characters are fully realized, their personalities and concerns critical to the story. Well done!The narrator has a wide range of distinct voices to breathe life into the many characters, ranging from Eastern European, British, American, and just the right flourish to embody various animals, cats, canines, snakes, bats, rats. Very talented.
