Publisher’s Summary

The Mom Test is a quick, practical guide that will save you time, money, and heartbreak.

They say you shouldn’t ask your mom whether your business is a good idea, because she loves you and will lie to you. This is technically true, but it misses the point. You shouldn’t ask anyone if your business is a good idea. It’s a bad question, and everyone will lie to you at least a little. As a matter of fact, it’s not their responsibility to tell you the truth. It’s your responsibility to find it, and it’s worth doing right.

Talking to customers is one of the foundational skills of both customer development and lean startup. We all know we’re supposed to do it, but nobody seems willing to admit that it’s easy to screw up and hard to do right. This book is going to show you how customer conversations go wrong, and how you can do better.

What Audible Listeners Are Saying

5/5 stars — “Filled with useful information “
A truly useful book for entrepreneurs and product managers in any industry. Accessible and down to earth style.

5/5 stars — “Clearly the BEST lean startup book I’ve read”
It’s a practical book rather than one where the author tries to sound smart, or promote himself as a personal trainer. It’s a no BS book giving you signs to watch out for whether you screwed up (as you will) or do well (eventually you will too) Lean startup books as a whole either miss focusing on customer development or treat it too "acdemically". As a freelancer I know that customers will actually push money into your hands so you can clear your schedule to solve their painful problem, so it makes perfect sense that I should NOT pitch my solution to them, put my ego on the line or be afraid to talk about money. Being a lean entrepreneur is closer to being a freelancer that serves multiple customers with one solution trying to find a clear path to solve a shared pain of them all.

5/5 stars — “Great listen for anyone doing any type of customer research “
I’ve been doing CR for a few years and feel I’m pretty good at it (my revenue backs that up). But there’s always room for improvement and I love a good refresher or different perspective. Rob delivers that and so much – he gets straight to the point, provides relevant examples and his causal approach is easy to follow and adapt. I’m a solopreneur not a tech startup, and this was still a goldmine with tons of valuable gems of insight.
