Once your audiobook collection grows past a few dozen titles, finding the right one for your current mood or project gets harder without some kind of system.

A Simple 4-Category System

  • Active (1–2 titles): What you’re actually listening to right now
  • Up Next (3–5 titles): A short, deliberately limited queue — long “someday” lists tend to create decision fatigue rather than help
  • Reference: Non-fiction you may want to revisit specific sections of later, rather than re-listen to in full
  • Finished: An archive, mainly useful for remembering what you’ve already read when a title comes up in conversation

Use Your App’s Native Library Tools

The Audible app lets you filter your library by “Not Started,” “In Progress,” and “Finished” automatically — there’s no need for a separate spreadsheet for basic status tracking; use the built-in filters first before building anything more elaborate.

Tag by Listening Context, Not Just Genre

Genre alone doesn’t tell you when a book fits your life. Some listeners find it more useful to mentally group titles by where they’ll listen — commute-friendly, workout-appropriate, or evening wind-down — since that constraint often matters more than genre when picking what to start next.
