Somewhere out beyond the edge of the universe there is a library that contains an infinite number of books, each one the story of another reality. One tells the story of your life as it is, along with another book for the other life you could have lived if you had made a different choice at any point in your life. While we all wonder how our lives might have been, what if you had the chance to go to the library and see for yourself? Would any of these other lives truly be better?

In The Midnight Library, Matt Haig’s enchanting blockbuster novel, Nora Seed finds herself faced with this decision. Faced with the possibility of changing her life for a new one, following a different career, undoing old breakups, realizing her dreams of becoming a glaciologist; she must search within herself as she travels through the Midnight Library to decide what is truly fulfilling in life, and what makes it worth living in the first place.

5/5 stars — “Life saving”
This book is, in short, life saving. I’ve had depression for as long as I can remember. I’ve always hated who I am and spent my daydreams wondering what I could have done differently, who I would be if I could have another chance. I’ve been getting better at accepting myself the past few years, this past year especially, thanks to a new mentor who went through similar things. This book was recommended to me by a book club I’m a part of and, at first, I dismissed it because it wasn’t my usual genre. But I listened to the sample on Audible and decided to give it a shot. I suggested it to my mentor when I was only an hour in. She finished it in a day. I only just finished tonight. To say that this story opened my eyes and reminded me that it’s okay to be a mess so long as you keep going, that it’s okay to fail or feel or backslide, so long as you never give up… Well, it still wouldn’t come close to explaining just how much this story meant to me. To Matt Haig, I would say thank you. Thank you and God bless because this was exactly what I needed and it came exactly WHEN I needed it. As to the narrator, she has an incredibly lovely voice and I very much enjoyed hearing her read. She really brought the story to life. All in all, I can’t rate this book high enough, but I can do my bit to spread it around as much as I can. This is a book everyone should read.
