Long audio marathons (10+ hours in a single sitting or across one day) put more strain on both ears and attention than typical daily listening, and benefit from a slightly different approach than a normal commute session.
Segment the Marathon
Rather than one continuous multi-hour session, plan natural breakpoints every 90 minutes to 2 hours — even a 5-minute silent pause measurably helps sustain attention and comprehension across a full-day listen.
Alternate Content Intensity
If you’re deliberately marathoning a long series or audiobook, alternating between denser and lighter sections (where the book allows) reduces the cumulative fatigue of sustained high-focus listening.
Hydration and Physical Comfort
Extended headphone wear, particularly in-ear designs, can cause physical discomfort well before mental fatigue sets in. Switching to over-ear headphones partway through a marathon session, if you have both available, can extend how long you can comfortably continue.
Know When to Stop
If you notice yourself rewinding frequently to re-hear passages you should have caught the first time, that’s a reliable sign of auditory fatigue setting in — a sign to pause rather than push through the remaining runtime.
