Publisher’s Summary
Educator and neuroscientist Dr. Jared Cooney Horvath reveals why digital tools in school consistently undermine learning—and what parents, teachers, and schools can do to push back with purpose.
Our children are struggling.
Schools, once alive with human connection, are now dominated by screens and digital tools. The result is unmistakable: declining performance, fractured attention, and the slow erosion of rigorous thought. For the first time in recent history, children are falling behind previous generations on many key measures of cognitive development.
In The Digital Delusion, neuroscientist and educator Dr. Jared Cooney Horvath reveals how the widespread use of laptops, tablets, and classroom software is undermining how children learn and develop. Drawing on decades of research, he provides practical tools for families to reassess device use at home, equips educators with the means to restore attention-rich learning environments, and helps schools make smarter decisions about technology. He exposes and dismantles the central myths driving the EdTech movement and lays out a clear path for putting people—not programs—back at the center of education. This is not a call to reject technology.
It’s a call to reclaim real learning.

What Audible Listeners Are Saying
5/5 stars — “Effective “
I liked the reasoning behind this research based on what we see and hear from our youth and even adults… I already implemented some of these measures with my kid and it’s made a huge impact in not only retaining but behavior and engagement. We moved our kid from a heavily used Ed Technology school to private, where physical books, whiteboards etc were only available .. grades dropped and frustration set in due to higher expectations and work difficulty levels … then it happened. Dialogue, curiosity, diligence and calmness. No cell phones at school so implemented 1 hour daily after homework completed.. lots of more recommendations that we will be incorporating. Example: studying in different locations or environments. Definitely recommend this book.— Gen, Audible listener
5/5 stars — “Cogent and compelling case for saving our and future generations’ brains”
This is an educator’s summary of how our minds learn and build coherence, and how students’ use of digital technologies disrupt this natural process. Decades of digitization and disrupted attention in schools have produced downward trends in educational achievement. I especially appreciated this book’s aim of serving as a policy-minded and practical playbook for driving incremental changes in schools, through efficacy reviews, financial audits, and small steps toward putting technologies in their proper place. He also deftly describes what AI can do for students: completely hijack their opportunity to learn at all.— Kevin McElroy, Audible listener
5/5 stars — “the future is in this book”
an important message for teachers, parents, students, and anyone who uses ed tech. best education book I’ve read in a while— J Alyse H, Audible listener
